Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science (INIOAS) and the Second Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources of China (SIO/MNR), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand collaborative research in deep-sea science and technology.

Given the Islamic Republic of Iran's membership in the BRICS alliance and INIOAS’s active participation in the BRICS Ocean and Polar Science and Technology Working Group, this MoU has been signed within the framework of BRICS countries’ collaboration in science, technology, and innovation, with a particular focus on deep-sea research.

Under the terms of this MoU, both parties agree to collaborate on joint deep-sea research projects, on Research on Cooperation and Sharing Mechanism of Deep-Sea Resources and Environment among BRICS.

The Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO), under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, is a leading marine research institution founded in 1966 and based in Hangzhou. It conducts cutting-edge research in areas such as deep-sea exploration, marine ecology, satellite oceanography, and ocean dynamics. SIO operates state-of-the-art research vessels and laboratories, including the State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics, and plays a key role in national and international scientific cooperation, including projects within the BRICS framework. With a strong team of expert scientists, SIO is recognized as a major center for ocean science, innovation, and policy support in China.
