National Marine Hazards Forecasting and Warning Center
Monitoring, modelling, and forecasting marine hazards to improve maritime safety and reduce the impacts of natural marine events.
About the Center
Iran has more than 5,800 kilometres of coastline, and approximately one quarter of the country's population lives in coastal areas. The history of severe events in marine and coastal environments highlights the importance of addressing these threats and hazards in a systematic and effective manner.
In general, a hazard refers to a condition or event that may threaten human life, health, property, assets, or the environment.
The National Marine Hazards Forecasting and Warning Center operates with the goal of developing advanced systems for monitoring, modelling, and forecasting marine events and hazards.
By using satellite data, marine observations, and numerical models, the center provides specialized forecasting services for atmospheric and oceanographic conditions.

Types of Marine Hazards
Marine Storms
A serious threat to coastal areas and marine activities through strong winds, high waves, and sudden changes in weather conditions.
Marine Currents
Understanding and forecasting marine currents to support marine operations, environmental management, and oceanographic studies.
Coastal Erosion and Sea-Level Fluctuations
Monitoring and forecasting changes in coastlines and sea level to reduce damage and support effective coastal zone management.
Biological and Environmental Hazards
Identification and assessment of phenomena such as harmful algal blooms, marine pollution, and other threats affecting marine ecosystems.
Geological Hazards
Monitoring and analysis of hazards caused by earthquakes, submarine landslides, tsunamis, and other geological processes affecting the marine environment.
Main Activities
Wave Forecasting
Modelling and forecasting wave height and characteristics for different marine areas.
Tropical Storm Behaviour Forecasting
Monitoring the track, intensity, and impacts of tropical systems over marine areas.
Marine Current Forecasting
Simulation and forecasting of surface and subsurface marine current patterns.
Tsunami Warning
Development of numerical models for the detection and forecasting of tsunami wave propagation.
