A specialized center for standardization in marine, oceanographic, and atmospheric sciences, with a focus on the development, revision, and advancement of national and international standards.

About the Standardization Office

Standardization activities at the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science began in 2016, when the institute assumed a role as a liaison for the development of standards under the National Organization for Standardization of Iran. Since then, the institute has actively participated in the development and revision of national standards and in technical standardization committees by drawing on the scientific expertise of its faculty members and researchers.

In 2018, in order to strengthen Iran's specialized participation in international standardization processes, the secretariat of the INSO/ISO/TC 147 Water Quality Correspondence Committee was assigned to the institute by the National Organization for Standardization of Iran. The responsibilities of chairing and serving as secretary of the committee were also assigned to specialists from the institute.

Continuing this process and expanding joint cooperation, the Standardization Office of the institute was established in 2024 within the framework of a cooperation agreement between the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science and the provincial standards authority. The office works to develop and promote standardization, develop and revise national and international standards, provide specialized services, implement external projects, and expand national and international cooperation.

Objectives

Developing and strengthening the standardization system in the fields of water quality and ocean sciences

Increasing the institute's participation in the development and revision of national and international standards

Improving the quality of research, laboratory, and technological services based on recognized standards

Strengthening cooperation with the National Organization for Standardization of Iran, scientific institutions, and specialized organizations at national and international levels

Developing knowledge, awareness, and education in standardization across the institute's specialized fields

Strengthening the role and position of the Islamic Republic of Iran in international standardization activities, particularly in the field of water quality

Activities

Managing and coordinating the secretariat of the INSO/ISO/TC 147 Water Quality Correspondence Committee

Developing, revising, and proposing national standards

Participating in international ISO Working Groups and projects

Implementing external research projects and providing specialized consulting services in the field of standardization and marine standards

Organizing specialized meetings, training courses, and workshops related to standardization

Providing consulting services to executive organizations, research institutions, and industry

Participating in exhibitions, conferences, and scientific and specialized events to promote the culture of standardization

Documenting, publishing, and communicating the institute's achievements in standardization

The secretariat of the Water Quality Correspondence Committee is based in the Standardization Office of the institute and is responsible for coordinating national and international activities related to this technical committee.

Key Activities of the Water Quality Correspondence Committee Secretariat

Active participation in international ISO Working Groups

Serving as chair of international ISO Working Groups

Serving as Project Leader in the development of proposed standards submitted by Iran

Effective participation in the development and revision of international water quality standards and strengthening the presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran in global standardization processes

Implementing external projects in the field of water quality

Planning, coordinating, and organizing meetings of the Correspondence Committee

Receiving, reviewing, and distributing draft standards and other documents of ISO/TC 147 among committee members

Consolidating expert opinions and submitting the views of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the International Organization for Standardization

Following up on voting processes and coordinating the participation of national experts in the development and revision of international standards

Participating in the development, revision, and adoption of national standards corresponding to international water quality standards

Establishing and developing a cooperation network with universities, research institutions, laboratories, and executive organizations

Identifying national standardization needs in the field of water quality and proposing the development of new standards

Documenting, communicating, and following up on the committee's programmes and activities
