According to the public relations report of the National Research Institute of Oceanography and Atmospheric Sciences, Dr. Ali Mehdinia, head of this research institute, in a statement on the occasion of the World Science Day and the beginning of the Science Promotion Week, referring to the UNESCO slogan entitled "Trust, Transformation and Tomorrow: The Science We Need by 2050", emphasized the central role of science in building a safe, sustainable and just future for all societies.

The full text of the statement is as follows:

Rereading the role of science in sustainable development

At the beginning of this statement, by congratulating the World Science Day, Dr. Mehdinia stated: "November 10, the World Science Day for Peace and Development, as one of the most important occasions in the UNESCO scientific calendar, is an opportunity to rethink the role of science in building a safer, more sustainable and more just future for all societies." He added: "This year, with the slogan "Trust, Transformation and Tomorrow: The Science We Need by 2050", UNESCO has turned the world's attention to the necessity of scientific development based on public trust, technological transformation and a long-term perspective."

The global vision of science until 2050

The head of the National Research Institute of Oceanography and Atmospheric Sciences, explaining the global perspective of science, noted: "On a global scale, challenges such as climate change, lack of water resources, pressure on ecosystems, pollution and the increasing need for energy have pushed the world towards greater dependence on research and technology." He continued: "Scientific policy until the horizon of 2050 focuses on creating equal research capacities at the global level, strengthening science diplomacy, and extensive investment in frontier research and transformative technologies."

Dr. Mehdinia considered the movement towards a resilient future dependent on international cooperation and stated: "Moving towards a resilient future by 2050 will only be possible by relying on advanced knowledge, scientific modeling, new technologies and international cooperation."

He enumerated the three main pillars of the horizon of science in the world until 2050 as follows:
1. Explosive advances in new technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data
2. Common global crises including climate change and water shortage
3. The necessity of everyone's participation in science by relying on the scientific literacy of societies"

oceans; The focus of today's science, tomorrow's security

In another part of his statement titled "Oceans; the axis of today's science, tomorrow's security", Dr. Mehdinia warned: "Oceans, which cover more than 70% of the earth's surface, are at the forefront of the challenges of the new age." He added: "International reports show that the rapid warming of the oceans, the rise of sea water levels, acidification, the reduction of oxygen and the spread of plastic and chemical pollution seriously threaten the future of many coastal areas and marine species."

Referring to UNESCO's "State of the Ocean 2024" report, the head of the research institute explained the key points of this report and said: "This report shows that the conditions of the oceans are experiencing an unprecedented speed of transformation, including unprecedented warming of waters, increasing acidification, rising sea levels, and the spread of marine pollution." He emphasized: "Facing these challenges requires evolution in ocean monitoring through smart technologies, artificial intelligence and global data networks."

The key role of new technologies

Dr. Mehdinia further emphasized the role of modern technologies in ocean management and stated: "The use of artificial intelligence, predictive modeling, remote sensing technologies, intelligent monitoring systems and satellite data have opened new horizons for climate change management, pollution detection and coastal protection." He added: "These technologies can be effective when they are combined with the promotion of science, the education of society and the increase of the country's scientific capacity."

The position of Iran and the actions of the research institute

Head of the National Research Institute of Oceanography and Atmospheric Sciences, pointing to Iran's scientific position, noted: "In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has taken important steps in the field of marine science development and science promotion by relying on its scientific capacities and cooperating with international networks."

Referring to the central role of this research institute, he added: "The National Institute of Oceanography and Atmospheric Sciences, as a national reference in the field of marine sciences, has tried to reduce the gap between science and society and to clarify the importance of oceans for people, policy makers and the young generation."

Dr. Mehdinia described the activities of the research institute and said: "This research institute has made extensive efforts in the field of promoting ocean science, increasing the marine literacy of the society, expanding national and international cooperation, and developing marine monitoring and research." He continued: "Execution of specialized workshops, active participation in the "Ocean Science Decade for Sustainable Development", public awareness, production of scientific content for different age groups and cooperation with UNESCO are among these actions."

Emphasis on future commitments

At the end of this statement, Dr. Mehdinia emphasized the necessity of people-oriented and forward-looking science and stated: "Now more than ever, the world needs science that is people-oriented, collaborative, ethical, and forward-looking; A science that is designed not only to solve today's problems, but also to protect the future of generations to come."

Recalling the vital role of the oceans, he said: "Oceans are the beating heart of the planet and we have a duty to combine knowledge, technology and public awareness to protect them. A sustainable future is not possible without science and research.

In the end, the head of the National Research Institute of Oceanography and Atmospheric Sciences emphasized the commitment of this institution and said: "The institute once again emphasizes its commitment to strategic research, development of science, promotion of oceanic literacy and expansion of international scientific cooperation and is ready to make the path of science-based maritime development smoother for dear Iran with the cooperation of universities, government organizations, local communities and international institutions."
